The Harlan County Domestic Violence Council and Family Life Abuse Center hosted their fifth annual Celebration of Appalachian Women event at the Harlan Center on Saturday where a large number of women took part in the celebration. Several women can be seen listening as HCDVC Victim Advocate Sheryl Caudel conducted a class on self-esteem. Nominated for Outstanding Appalachian Women of the Year were Alice Sage, the late Roberta (Birdie) Donahue and Dawn Nunez. This year’s winner was Dawn Nunez, of Harlan.

A visual display called the Clothesline Project was placed in the lobby of the Harlan Center during the event to bear witness to the violence against women and children. The project consists of T-shirts designed by survivors of abuse and those who have lost loved one to it.
