Preliminary drawings of renovations proposed at Harlan Elementary School were presented to members of the Harlan Independent Board of Education at a recent meeting. GRW Principal Architect Jimmy Piper said construction will begin sometime in the summer, after the school year ends.
Piper said he had met with the food service staff at the elementary school and asked them if they would be interested, along with any board member, in visiting other facilities to view their cafeteria areas to get new ideas to incorporate on how to serve food and serve different menus.
“The main idea is to make the cafeteria attractive so that the kids will want to use it,” said Piper. “The amount of time they’re required to spend in line has a direct correlation to whether they will come there or not. We’re looking at ways to streamline the line and paying process.”
Piper said the next steps included getting the district facility plan going, assessment drafts in a report format for the board and to put together a submittable packet for the elementary school project, which includes itemized and more detailed estimates, the plans and specifications in draft form. He said once he has a more defined idea where the board and kitchen staff stand on the kitchen, they can get a finalized plan.
Piper presented board members with a preliminary drawing of a canopy to be constructed for the exterior of the elementary school. The drawings showed a structure made from exposed tube steel, metal deck on top and metal roof. It also included lighting on the side of pillars and guttering will be an underground drainage system.
Another item Piper told board members needed to be addressed were brick pavers in the walkway leading into the elementary school. He said the bricks have begun to deteriorate and will need to be replaced. He suggested filing the spots with concrete or spot replace the damaged brick.
“If I remember right those bricks are from the original building that burned,” said Superintendent David Johnson. “So, if we did a memorial brick that might be a simpler way of doing this.”
Johnson said the bulk of the elementary project is replacement of approximately 140 doors and the handicap access to the building.
“There are existing doors that are metal and wooden and the intent is to replace metal doors with metal and wooden doors with wood,” said Piper. “Leo Miller is in the process of doing the survey for the handicap access in the front and side yard area and we’re waiting on that report.”

*Appointed board member Will Miller to the school’s Calendar Committee;
*Declared school bus No. 99 as surplus for disposal and approved a resolution for sale of the surplus bus;
*Approved a FRYSC grant application for 2013-2014;
*Approved matching funds for SFCC Technology offer of assistance;
*Approved nonresident student contracts for Bell, Letcher and Leslie counties.
