Firefighters battle a fire at a Cumberland Avenue residence in Harlan on Friday. Fire Chief Linette Hutchison said she was at the fire station when a passerby spotted the fire at approximately 3:30 p.m. and rushed to the nearby fire station to report it to her. As she and firemen Ethan Brock and Travis Nelums arrived on the scene, Hutchison said the elderly occupants of the home were being helped from behind the home having escaped uninjured. The fire left the home with “significant” fire, smoke and water damage, she said. The home was reportedly owned by Steven Brock and occupied by Harry and Virginia Jones. Assisting the Harlan Fire Department at the scene were the Sunshine Volunteer Fire Department, Harlan City Police and Harlan EMS. After the fire was contained, firefighters and family members assisted in recovering some of the fire victims’ furnishings and belongings. Hutchison said the cause of the fire had not been determined and that firefighters would remain on the scene for several hours.
