School bus driver loves singing, writing gospel music
by Special to the Enterprise

Lawana Blevins travels a lot of miles each day, mostly as a bus driver in the Clover Fork area for Harlan County Schools. However this Friday, Blevins will be traveling a much greater distance as she heads to Booneville, Miss., to perform in concert her recently released “It Ain’t Over” and other gospel music.

“It Ain’t Over” is being played by radio stations across the country. The single hit recording by Double-E Promotions has been playing since Nov. 1, as part of a compilation disc with various other artists. Blevins is elated that others outside our county are hearing her music, hoping it touches the lives of those who hear it.

Blevins has been singing and playing the piano since her childhood. “I want to minister (through music) and let people know there is hope,” she said. “I love it. I’ve always loved singing and playing music. My passion for what I do is to see people come to know the Lord, lives changed and to let people know there is still hope. “

Asked about her new recording, Blevins says it simply carries the message to listeners that “It Ain’t Over until God says it’s over.”

She shares her musical talent by teaching private music lessons in guitar and piano. Blevins has recorded two compact discs, both originals. They are available for $10 each from Blevins, at Abraham’s Music in Harlan and the Mission Center, a Christian music store in Cumberland. She and her husband, Stanley, who is an evangelist, have a gospel group called “Broken 4 Christ.” “We travel to different churches and sing and preach the Word,” said Blevins. “We held a weekend revival back in August in Dayton, Oh., and had two souls saved which made it worth the trip.”

She has two sons, Michael Hensley, 17, and Jacob Hensley, 13.

She is a member of the Evarts Church of God.

On Sunday mornings, she serves as pianist at the Mary Helen United Methodist Church.

For those interested in watching her perform on Saturday, there will be a live Internet feed through UBN-TV 53 in Mississippi.

Joan Anderson, director of transportation for Harlan County Schools, said, “We have several talented musicians who drive a school bus. Lawana is one of them. She has a beautiful voice and writes some of her songs. Not only can she sing, but she also plays the piano. “

“She is a good bus driver and an asset to our transportation department,” said Anderson. She maintains good discipline on her bus and is a safe driver. I sincerely hope she goes far with her music profession.”

History abounds at Oven Fork Mercantile
In March, my husband and I drove over U.S. 119 from Pikeville on our way to Cumberland. He has collected blues, country and jazz music, circa 1920s to the mid-1930s, for about 30 years now. Every time we pass a yard sale, a flea market or an old store that looks promising, he slams on the brak...
