Without any fanfare, Frank Vicini gave up his job as head football coach at Cumberland earlier this week.

No formal announcement has been made, but Vicini confirmed that he has resigned his coaching position. He declined to comment further, saying he preferred not to make a big deal of the decision.

Vicini led Cumberland through an up-and-down season in 2003. Following the loss of star athletes Eddie Creech and Matt Haynes, the Redskins fought to a 5-5 record this year and missed the playoffs for the first time since 1999.

Cumberland principal Ed Clem said he was surprised by the coach's decision.
