A fire destroyed a home on Cumberland Avenue in Harlan on Wednesday. Harlan Fire Chief Linette Hutchison said her department was paged to the scene at approximately 11:30 p.m. on Tuesday and upon arrival they found that the fire was already coming out of the second floor of the home. She said the exterior of the rear portion of the home was in flames. The home, which was previously owned by the late Jim Scalf, was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Hutchinson said the home had a lot of contents and there were “a lot of little explosions during the fire.” Walnut Street was blocked most of the day on Wednesday to help firefighters contain the scene. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. Also assisting Harlan Fire Department with manpower was Sunshine Volunteer Fire Department, Harlan City Police and the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office. Seen using a fire hose to soak the fire down are Harlan Fire Department firefighters Owen Petrey (front) and Brandon Caldwell.
