I have three children, a daughter and two twin boys. They are all grown…sort of. When they were younger, we never knew what was going to happen next, especially with the boys.
For instance, we had just bought a used car, a Chevrolet Lumina with a six cylinder engine, red. It growled when the engine was running. It was a great car, fast and cool looking. One day, I came outside to find both boys sliding down the windshield of the car, over the hood, and onto the ground. They had cracked the windshield from top to bottom. It was a wonder it hadn’t broken!
Another time, our septic tank needed pumping because it had filled up and the drains weren’t working in the house. After pumping it out, the drains still didn’t work. I had to dig it up, open the lid of the tank, and see if there was anything blocking it. I found nothing. A friend of mine put a snake, a tool that cleans out drains, up through the tank and into the drainage pipe. All of a sudden a flood of “waste” came down the pipe and into the tank. Included in the flow was a toilet paper rod; the plastic rod that holds the toilet paper. My son, finding the toilet paper empty, flushed the plastic rod down the toilet thus stopping up ALL the drains in the house!
You just never knew what was going to happen!
For all the craziness and difficulties, though, I wouldn’t trade those moments for anything. Those kids were, and are, an absolute joy to me and my wife. We delight in them, even their silly antics.
God is the same with us. Consider the following scriptures from Psalms all quoted from the New Living Translation:
Psalm 18:19: He led me to a place of safety; he rescued me because he delights in me.
Psalm 37:23: The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every detail of their lives.
Psalm 147:11: No, the Lord’s delight is in those who fear him, those who put their hope in his unfailing love.
Psalm 149:4: For the Lord delights in his people; he crowns the humble with victory.
God delights in His children. There is no doubt about that. I think God looks down on us with the same joy we look at our own children.
That is an amazing thought. Considering how much an earthly parent loves his or her child, to think that God delights in us the same way is incredibly moving. Psalm 37:23 even says that God delights in every detail of our lives; every detail! God knows everything about us. God WANTS to know everything about us. He is interested in everything we do, think, or say. It’s not because He’s waiting on us to trip up so He can document our mistakes. It’s because He loves us and wants to see what we’re up to.
He takes delight in laughing with us, sometimes at us. He takes delight in our accomplishments. He takes delight in the love we express to Him. He takes delight in hearing our thoughts and opinions. He takes delight in watching us grow. He even takes delight in our deaths because it means we will see Him in person all that much sooner!
What an amazing God!
