The unexpected — a great teacher

The unexpected things we receive in life are always the best.I am mindful that this statement can be made for all things good, but the unwanted unexpected things that are unwelcome do not fit into the ‘always best’ category.Recently I spoke at Encounter Community Church. Encounter is a new church plant in Ownesboro-Daviess County. Their intent is lead people to an encounter with Jesus Christ. On Saturday, the University of Kentucky played Wisconsin ...

US-Israel ties

Even before its establishment, the State of Israel had a special relationship with the U.S. - and for good reason. On an ideological level, Israel is a country that reflects America’s founding spirit. Similar to the founding fathers of America, who were primarily Protestants escaping religious persecution, Zionists of all stripes were motivated by the need, particularly after the Holocaust, to empower the Jewish people with national self-determination as a means of escaping endemic anti...

Healthier America, saving our nation from collapse

My mother once felt bad because we didn’t have an ashtray in our house. Many of our relatives smoked. They would come to our house and sit for an hour or more and light up while sitting in the living room. She stated, “I don’t have an ashtray to offer our guests,” as though we should have felt embarrassed and inhospitable. It wasn’t long after that statement that a couple of ashtrays appeared in our house and my uncles and other visitors would sit and knock the a...

Special services mark Holy Week

We are in the midst of Holy Week and will soon celebrate Good Friday, a religious holiday observed primarily by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary.Christ agonized on the cross for six hours. After that day, there was no stopping Him

(Luke 9:51) Ever been resolved to get something done? Ever been so resolute that you were determined that nothing would deter you from the seeing the task through to completion? Have you ever noticed that so often the things that people are so unwavering to about really don’t make much difference in the forward movement of humanity? I am a teacher and have watched students so determined to get an A on a test that they spend endless hours in preparation. They forsake family and friends, ...

Team TKO’s fight against juvenile diabetes

Longtime, regular readers of this column already know that I, along with son Christopher and 5-year-old grandson, Tyler Kane Ochs (TKO) are diabetics. I’m type 2, which means I get by with oral medication, paying close attention to what I eat and as much physical exercise as I can muster. Both Chris and TKO are insulin dependent, but Tyler gets the short end of that stick. Chris usually only has to do blood tests and injections twice a day.

What traits are found in our particular denomination that others don’t have? With fuzzy edges surrounding most denominations, they find themselves more and more homogeneously bundled. Without need for adjustment in belief and worship, church-goers are feeling a freedom of religious mobility — casually changing denominations due to pe...

When you love a junkie or a drunk

“My daughter is a junkie. I know it now and I don’t know what to do,” or “He’s a drunk just like his father. It’s gonna kill him or he’s gonna kill somebody ‘cause he drives crazy when he’s drunk.”Let’s start with an answer that seems cold, uncaring: You are powerless to change these life-threatening behaviors of your daughter, of your husband.
