A little discipline at the plate went a long way for Harlan County senior catcher Bridget Robinson.

“She’s a free swinger, and the last couple of games she’s been a little undisciplined at the plate,” Harlan County coach Tim McElyea said. “We talked to her about being more disciplined and just swinging at strikes, and look at what happened.”

What happened was a mammoth three-run blast over the fence in left field Friday in the first inning of a 15-0 four-inning win over visiting Williamsburg. Robinson had a three-run homer and a single to lead Harlan County’s 15-hit attack.

“Even our reserves came out hitting the ball today,” McElyea said.

Robinson’s homer was more than enough for Harlan County pitcher Destinee Jenkins, who threw a no-hitter with seven strikeouts and one walk.

“Jenkins is a battler out there,” McElyea said. “She was hitting her spots. Destinee has a lot of confidence, and for her to be 4-2 at this point is pretty amazing.”

Jenkins had a double and single. Chyanna Harris, Mallory Johnson and Savanna Sergent each added two singles for the 4-2 Lady Bears. Kaitlyn Stittums, Farren Clark and Erin Cornett added one double each. Amber Creech and Tia King contributed one single each.

The host Cavaliers broke open a scoreless game with a three-run fourth inning, then added three more in the fifth to defeat Harlan County.

Farren Clark and Chyanna Harris led Harlan County with two singles each. Tia King added a double. Kaitlyn Stittums contributed a single.

Harlan County scored three times in the sixth inning after Stittums and Clark led off with singles. Sergent’s ground out brought home Stittums. King doubled in another run, then Harris singled in the Lady Bears’ final run.

Jenkins pitched a complete game for the Lady Bears, giving up six runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.
