Bears’ upset bid falls short

Harlan County fell just short of knocking off one out the mountain’s top teams on Friday. The Black Bears forced 14th Region power Perry Central into overtime, before fallins 78-71.
Senior Justin Johnson powered the Commodores. The Western Kentucky commit poured in 32 points and was just as dominant on the glass to lift Perry Central to the win. Austin Hill and Matthew Turner each added 13 points for the Commodores.
Junior forward Zach Caldwell had 26 points to lead the Black Bears. Junior guard Cody Bumgardner added 15 points in the loss.
Harlan County trailed by one after eight minutes of play, but outscored Perry Central by six in the second quarter to take a 40-38 advantage into the half. Perry Central led by three after three quarters, but Harlan County fought back to tie the game in the final period. The Bears were outscored 14-7 in the extra frame.
Harlan County (7-10) will return to action Friday at home against Bell County in a 52nd District double-header. Perry Central (12-4) will host Clay County on Tuesday.

Harlan County (8-1) held off the Commodores 51-49 in the junior varsity contest.
Freshman Jared Sizemore recorded 17 points to pace the Black Bears. Cody Brewer contributed 13 points. David Turner had 10 points . Josh Hunting tallied six points. Malik Simmons and Tommy North each added two points, while William Bowling tossed in one.
Damon Tobler scored 16 and Travis Dunn added 14 to lead Perry Central.
