Harlan County swept a pair of opponents from the volunteer State in the annual Black Bears Classic on Saturday. HCHS downed Sullivan Central, Tenn., 83-57 in the opening contest before outlasting Community, Tenn., 100-81 in the nightcap.


Five Black Bears scored in double figures in the victory over Sullivan Central. Senior Scotty Bailey led the way with 16 points, connecting on all eight his shot attempts. Junior Zach Caldwell hit a trio of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points. Harlan County received a big scoring lift from the reserves, as Cameron Carmical, Treyce Spurlock and Zach Wilson each contributed 10 points coming off the bench.


Senior forward Lucas Parker paced the Cougars with 28 points.


Harlan County put together a 10-0 run in the first quarter to take a 22-12 advantage after one quarter. The Black Bears had nine baskets in the second quarter to stretch the lead to 44-26 at the half. The teams traded points throughout the third period, before Harlan County put the game out of reach in the fourth.

Harlan County pulled away in the fourth quarter in an offensive shootout against Community High School.


The Black Bears jumped out to a 13 point lead with a 28-point first quarter. Community pulled to within two at the half. The Hurricanes rallied with six straight points to open the second half and make it a four point, but Harlan County pushed the advantage back to 10 at the end of the period. The Bears continued to pull away in the fourth quarter.


Harlan County put five players in double figures for the third straight game. Caldwell led the Bears with 25 points. Bailey and Junior Fred Massey each added 13 points. Junior Cody Bumgardner and Spurlock added 12 and 11 points, respectively.


Senior center Blake Fanning scored 21 points to lead Community (7-6).


Harlan County (5-0) returns to action today at defending 13th Region champion Clay County.
