Muriel Caddell Petra, 86. Kenvir, passed away Monday, September 23, 2013, at the Greg and Noreen Wells Hospice Care Center in Hazard following a long illness. Born January 28, 1927 in Harlan County she had lived here most of her life. Muriel was the owner and operator of Petra’s Grocery for many years, and a faithful member of the Brittains Creek Missionary Baptist Church. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William Petra; her mother, Jessie Cummings Caddell; her father, Albert Caddell; a son, George William “Bill” Petra; a brother, James Caddell; and three sisters, Hazel Haynes, Mary Caddell and Margaret Burkhart.

Survivors include five children, Barbara Ross and husband, Jim, Morristown, TN; Eddie Petra, Hamilton, OH; Mike Petra and wife, Debra, Kenvir; Patty McCreary and husband, Freddy, Kenvir; and Jeannie Petra, Kenvir; one brother, Larry Caddell, Bardstown, KY; and two sisters, Patsy Chappell, London, KY; and Janice Hensley, Scottsville, KY.

Also surviving are 17 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.

Visitation will be held Wednesday from 5 until 8 pm at the Brittains Creek Missionary Baptist Church.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, September 26, 2013, at 1 PM at the Brittains Creek Missionary Baptist Church with the Reverend Don Johnson officiating.

Burial will follow in Evarts Memorial Gardens. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
