Independence Day will be celebrated Friday at Leeman Field in Pennington Gap, Va., beginning at 9 a.m., with activities planned for the entire family throughout the day.
“Our fireworks display will begin at 10 p.m. after the National Anthem is performed at 9:55 p.m.,” said city secretary Marie Jones. “A hospitality tent will be set up on the left as you go through the gates at Leeman Field. Be sure to stop by the tent to pick up a schedule of activities, get a free bottle of cold water and register for door prizes.”
Jones said several vendors have committed for the event with lots of activities for children.
“The day will begin at 9 a.m. with tennis and horseshoe tournaments,” said Jones. “At 10 a.m., we’ll have a co-ed 3-on-3 basketball tournament and a co-ed volleyball tournament. Also at 10 a.m. a soccer contest will be held, our city pool opens, closing at 7 p.m. and a tractor show will be held.”
Jones said at 11 a.m. to noon the Lee County Twirlers and Tumblers will be on the main stage.
“Also at 11 a.m. we’ll begin our auto show,” said Jones. “At 1 p.m. we’ll have Butch Williams performing on stage with various types of music. Pool games will begin at 2 p.m. at the pool. A crowd favorite tractor pull will begin at 4 p.m.”
The Pennington Gap Police Department and Lee County Sheriff’s Department will host finger painting from 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. There will be a karaoke contest on the main stage from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
“Leading us up to the fireworks display will be rock and roll and southern rock band ‘Hammer Down’ performing music from the 1960s to today’s best rock and roll on the main stage from 8 p.m. until 9:55 p.m.,” said Jones. “We’ll have the National Anthem at 9:55 p.m. and the fireworks at 10 p.m. We invite everyone to attend.”
