The Evarts Tourist and Convention Commission has decided on a musical act for the city’s fall festival, hoping to secure country singer Marty Brown to headline the event.

Brown released four albums in the 90s, but never scored a chart hit. He disappeared from the national music scene for nearly 20 years before reappearing as a contestant on “America’s Got Talent” in 2013.

City Clerk Kristi Lamb updated the panel on the details.

“He’s the guy that was on ‘America’s Got Talent’…the same season Jimmy Rose was on,” said Lamb. “He does have about 222,000 followers on Facebook, which is a pretty decent number. He has performed at the Kentucky State Fair. I’ve spoken to a couple of people who have seen him perform at the Kentucky State Fair and Indiana State Fair and they said he puts on a really good show.”

Lamb said Brown would do a two-hour show as well as two hours of meet and greet for a fee of $1,000.

According to Lamb, the city will have to supply sound equipment.

“He is probably going to be the biggest name that we can find at this point in time for a reasonable amount,” said Lamb. “The next biggest would be the local people that have gotten bigger, like Brooklyn Woods. I did talk to her…and she said that she believed it was about $500 or $600 for one hour.”

Lamb told the panel Brown has opened for country legends Hank Williams Jr. and Alabama.

Commission member Henry Shackleford added that Brown’s wife, who handles the booking, told him there is more to Brown’s show than just him.

“She said when you book him you book the whole family,” said Shackleford.

Shackleford added that Brown’s wife, Shelly, sings duets with him and other family members also perform.

A motion was passed to book Brown for the festival.

In other commission activity, a proposed donation to a Christian music concert being planned for Bell County was turned down because the commission felt it was outside their authority to donate money to events outside of Harlan County.
