With over 6,200 coal miners losing their jobs in eastern Kentucky over the past two years, hope for the re-opening of some of those mines closed are a high priority to the region.

In 2011, Alpha Natural Resources (ANR) took ownership of the Gilliam property in Cumberland with its acquisition of Massey Energy Company.

After inquiring if ANR has plans at this time to reopen mines in that area in the near future, Steve Higginbottom, ANR spokesperson said, “The company is evaluating the best use of this and all of its assets as we continually look to optimize our footprint.”

Alpha is the nation’s largest supplier of metallurgical coal used in the steel-making process and is a major supplier of thermal coal to electric utilities and manufacturing industries.

According to ANR coal generates 40 percent of the world’s electricity and powers almost 70 percent of global steel production.
