The Belfry Pirates (8-0) will take on the Pike County Central Hawks (5-3) in a big district game Friday night at Buckley’s Creek.

The Pirates are ranked No. 1 in Class 3A and have continued to improve as the season progressed, despite having several injuries to deal with. Belfry’s depth, especially in the backfield, has really helped Coach Philip Haywood’s rushing offense continue to roll.

In the meantime, Coach John Chapman’s team heads into the game with a two game winning streak. Two weeks ago they upset Lawrence County at home 26-0 and last week they defeated winless Sheldon Clark 47-7 in Inez.

The Hawks started off the season with a loss to Henry Clay in the Pike County Bowl and another loss at Williamsburg. Then they won three straight games over Letcher County, Prestonsburg and Morgan County, before losing to Fairview.

Belfry has scored a total of 304 points in eight games this season. They have only allowed 129 by their opponents.

The Pirates have amassed 2,681 rushing yards and 514 through the air.

Senior Justin Johnson leads the way with 540 yards in only six games. Johnson has hit pay-dirt seven times. Junior fullback Austin Hatfield has 480 yards in only five games. He has scored two touchdowns. Senior Trenity Carr is next in line with 449 yards and leads the team in touchdowns with nine.

Freshman Andrew Fletcher has 368 yards and four TDs, while senior Devontae Dari, who has started the past two games because of injuries, has 274 yards and four scores. Senior quarterback Sani Warren has 240 yards and he has scored six TDs. Sophomore Xondre Willis had 207 yards and two TDs in five games before suffering a season ending knee injury.

Junior Keaton Taylor easily leads the receiving corps with 25 receptions for 390 yards and five TDs. Carr has 10 receptions out of the backfield for 65 yards. Cody Bostic has four catches and one TD.

Seniors Hayden Hatfield and Joey Duty have been leading the defense. Hatfield has 91 tackles which includes solo stops and assists. Duty has 57, while Dakota Stanley has 49 and Austin Hatfield 43 tackles.

Pike Central is led by junior quarterback Mac Justice, has 1900 yards passing this season and has rushed for 775 yards. Justice has thrown for 19 TDs and rushed for nine.

Running back Dakota Ray became leading back after Marcus Johnson was lost in the first game of the year with a leg injury. He has 700 rushing yards and nine TDs.

Wide Receiver and placekicker Brad Elkins has 850 yards receiving and 11 TD receptions. Andrew Fields is another passing target for Justice.
