After losing three first three games by a combined four runs, the Harlan County Black Bears broke through for their first win Saturday at McMinn County, Tenn., with a 10-1 rout of East Hamilton, Tenn.

The Bears pounded out 11 hits, led by two singles from Tyler Cornett and Brendan Rutherford. Blake Rutherford added a double. Zach Doss, Scotty Bailey, Gage Burkhart, Dylan Cornett, Sawyer Fields and Cole Wilson added one single each.

Freshman left-hander Jared Sizemore earned the win as he allowed one run on two hits in 4 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and two walks. Tyler Cornett allowed one hit in 1 1/3 innings with three strikeouts and two walks. Connor Leisge struck out three in one inning to close the game, giving up one hit.

Bailey, who scored three runs, walked and came home on an error to give the Bears a 1-0 lead in the first inning.

HCHS added three runs in the second inning. Tyler Cornett led off with a single. Wilson, the courtesy runner, moved to second on a hit by Brendan Rutherford and scored on a two-out hit by Blake Rutherford. Doss added an RBI double.

Fields walked in the fourth inning and eventually scored as part of a double steal. Burkhart added an RBI single later for a 6-0 lead, driving home Bailey, who had walked.

Doss and Bailey each walked in the sixth inning and scored on an errant pickoff attempt.

Cornett led off the seventh inning with a hit and moved up on Wilson’s bunt single. Brendan Rutherford and Fields had RBI singles to close the scoring.

Harlan County’s hard-luck start continued Saturday with a 6-5 loss to Walker Valley, Tenn., in a round-robin tournament at McMinn County, Tenn.

Walker Valley scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to win.

Harlan County lost 3-1 to both Franklin County, Tenn., and Cookeville, Tenn., in action Friday.

The Bears had 10 hits in the loss to Walker Valley, led by Blake Rutherford and Fields with two each. Doss, Bailey, Leisge, Wilson, Anthony Jenkins and Dylan Cornett had one hit each.

Fields allowed five runs (two earned) on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings with two strikeouts and one walk. Tyler Cornett gave up a hit to the only batter he faced. Doss suffered the loss as he allowed only one run and one hit in 2 1/3 innings but was hurt by seven walks. He struck out two.

Burkhart and Fields had the only hits for HCHS in the loss to Cookeville.

Fields had two of Harlan County’s five hits in the loss to Franklin County. Dylan Cornett, Tyler Cornett and Jenkins added one each.
