New Harlan races past Evarts

New Harlan’s high-octane offensive was firing on all cylinders Monday, as the Patriots downed Evarts 36-8 in seventh- and eighth-grade football action.

“We got to move the ball around a lot to a lot of different kids and look at each individual play. The kids came out and performed well after a disappointing loss last week,” said New Harlan coach Chad Wood. “I have challenged these kids and told them that they can be as good as they want to be. They just have to come out and put their work in each and every day and stay focused in practice.”

Caleb Carmical took the opening handoff and raced 48-yards for the score to put New Harlan up 6-0 just 10 seconds into the contest.

Minutes later, Paul Stapleton broke free for a 38-yard scoring run in the first quarter.

Stapleton added another touchdown in the opening period. The eighth-grade back went in on a 3-yard run. Colby King added the two-point conversion. The touchdown was set up by a big completion from quarterback Jacob Branson to receiver Christian Hall.

Stapleton also scored on the defensive side. The corner intercepted a pass as the Evarts 25 and raced 25-yards the other way into the end zone. Hunter Owens ran in the two-point conversion to push the lead to 30-0.

Branson found Hall again for the final score of the first half. This time, the two teamed up on a 35-yard score.

Evarts’ Thomas Potter scored the only touchdown of the second half on a 3-yard run. Ethan Baird added the two-point run.

New Harlan (6-1) returns to action Sept. 26 at home against Knox Central. Evarts (2-4) is scheduled to host Middlesboro on Thursday.

The Patriots opened the scoring when Matthew Brown raced into the end zone on a 32-yard run with 3:04 remaining in the first quarter.

New Harlan maintained the six point lead into the third quarter, when the Patriots added to the margin. Brown made it a two-score lead with a 45-yard touchdown run with 2:34 left in the third quarter.

The Pats added another score early in the fourth quarter. This time it was Ben Landis scoring on a 17-yard run.

New Harlan (7-0) will host Knox Central on Sept. 26. Evarts (5-2) will travel to Pineville on Oct. 2.
