Kicking off the Labor Day weekend, the Evarts Tourist Commission will host their annual Labor Day Festival in downtown Evarts Aug. 30 from noon to 9 p.m.

Highlighting this year’s event will be country music recording artist and former contestant on “America’s Got Talent” Marty Brown. With four studio albums and one charted single on the Billboard Hot Country Songs charts, Brown will perform from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.

A contestant on season eight of America’s Got Talent, Brown advanced as far as the semi-final round. After competing on America’s Got Talent, he released a new single, available for download on iTunes, “Whatever Makes You Smile,” which Brown says he wrote for his wife, Shellie, for Valentine’s Day.

Opening for Brown will be local rock and roll band “Coal Trucker.” Band members include Mark Hatmaker on vocals, William Abner on bass, Paul Nolan on lead guitar, Johnny Murphy on drums, Matt Duckworth on rhythm guitar and Rick Harriss on lead, rhythm and acoustic guitar. They will perform from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Also performing during the festival will be local classic rock and roll band “Big Daddy and the Heat.” Band members include Rick Jones, Ross Bailey, John Deaton and Paul Nolan. They will be performing prior to “Coal Trucker.”

“We’ll have a variety of vendors, demonstrators, food and drink for everyone’s enjoyment,” said ETC Chair Janice Napier. “We’ll also have inflatables and the Shriners train for the children and adults to enjoy.”

Some of those planning to participate in the festival are: Friendly Village, who will have homemade arts and crafts, bird houses, key fobs and jewelry boxes. Beth Thompson, of Harlan, who will have oragami owl jewelry and gifts, along with snap jewelry. Polly and Preston McLain will have horseshoe nail cross necklaces and key chains, fleeced blankets, button necklaces, Evarts High School ornaments, picnic benches and tables. Master woodcrafter Donald Honeycutt, of Wallins, a favorite at the Festival of the Mountain Masters, will be demonstrating and selling his award winning scroll saw artwork and baskets. Crowd favorite Phyllis Branham, of Cumberland, will be there with her cakes, pies, candy, nut logs and so much more. Brittney Kelly, from Cawood, will be here with homemade goods and crafts said City Clerk Kristi Lamb.

“Sam Milwee, of Wallins, will be here with purses and fashion bags, jewelry and sunglasses. Jeremy and Rebecca Brock, of Evarts, will have their award-winning barbecue pit and drinks,” said Lamb. “They have been traveling and doing competitions and really provide a good product. We hope to have a man from Tazewell (Tenn.) who does several different varieties of pork rinds participating this year. We have many others who will have things such as hamburgers, polish sausages and all the fixings that go along with them. We invite everyone to make plans to attend”
