The Miss Harlan County Homecoming Scholarship Pageant will begin at 6 p.m. this evening in the Harlan County High School Auditorium. Seventeen young ladies representing Harlan Independent and Harlan County High School and their escorts will be competing for college scholarships. Contestants include:


JADE MCKENZIE GOODWIN


Jade is the 18-year-old daughter of Debbie Austin and Justin Goodwin, of Baxter.


Her extracurricular actives include First Priority Leadership, drama club, she ran track and field and cross country, and she is a member of the HWC youth group, dance team, National Honors Society and Talent Search.


Her hobbies include attending and volunteering at her church, bow-hunting whitetail deer, four-wheeling, Zumba with Stacey, shooting, running and shopping with her mom.


Her future plans are to attend Southeast Community College to obtain an associate’s in nursing, and then continue to EKU for a bachelor’s, and then continue her education further at LMU for her master’s to fulfill her dreams of one day becoming a nurse practitioner. She also plans to go on many mission trips to Honduras with her church.


KAITLYN ALLISON BLEDSOE


Kaitlyn is the 17-year-old daughter of Rick and Kelli Bledsoe, of Harlan.


Her extracurricular activities include tennis, cheerleading, Musettes, FBLA, Drama Club and Beta Club where she is treasurer. She was voted Miss Senior and Best Personality by her senior class, and was crowned the 2013 Football Homecoming Queen and the 2014 Kentucky Mountain Laurel Princess.


Her hobbies include shopping, spending time at the lake, baking, hanging out with friends and family and going to church.


Her future plans are to pursue her bachelors at the University of Kentucky and then further her education to work towards a career in health care.


BRITTANY DANIELLE DIXON


Brittany is the 18-year-old daughter of John and Karen Dixon, of Gordon.


Her extracurricular activities include National Honors Society, Beta Club, First Priority, Educational Talent Search, cheerleading and track and field


Her hobbies include reading, running, fishing, tanning, spending time at the lake, hanging out with friends, Zumba and shopping.


Her future plans are to attend Lincoln Memorial University, where she will be a part of the cheerleading team, and she will major in veterinarian health science and then continue on to veterinarian school. After graduating she wants to move back to Harlan and open up her own animal hospital.


MCKENZIE BRYANT


McKenzie is the 18-year-old daughter of Shawn and Lesley Bryant, of Harlan.


Her extracurricular activities include cheerleading, NHS, Beta Club, First Priority and volunteering at the local animal shelter.


Her hobbies include reading, drawing, attending church, spending time with family and friends, baking cakes and baiting hooks, bonfires and four-wheeler riding.


Her future plans are to see blue at the University of Kentucky this fall where she plans on majoring in biology, and applying to medical school. She one day hopes to become an anesthesiologist.


EMILY LANDIS


Emily is the 18-year-old daughter of Michael and Michelle Landis, of Harlan.


Her extracurricular activities include being a member of the Beta Club, National Honors Society, the high school choir and Educational Talent Search. Emily has been a four-year varsity cheerleader, where she was captain, and she is a pianist. She is a member of the mission team at her Methodist church, was voted Most Attractive by her senior class and represented Harlan County High School in the Mountain Laurel Festival as an attendant.


Her hobbies include running, working out, Zumba, swimming, gardening, shopping and spending time with family and friends.


Her future plans are to attend the University of Kentucky in the fall and work to get a degree in physical therapy. She hopes to return home after college and start her own business here in Harlan.


CAITLYN ALEXANDRA HORNSBY


Caitlyn is the 18-year old daughter of Randy and Melissa Hornsby, of Harlan.


Her extracurricular activities include cheerleading, tennis, musettes, FBLA and journalism


Her hobbies include fishing, spending the day at the lake, gymnastics, Zumba, hiking, four-wheeling and playing guitar


Her future plans are to attend Eastern Kentucky University in the fall to pursue a major in communication disorders and a double minor in psychology and sociology.


HALEY COOK


Haley is the 18-year-old daughter of Roy and Lisa Cook, of Cawood.


Her extracurricular activities include being a member of the dance team, 4-H Teen Club, Educational Talent Search, Gifted and Talented Leadership and journalism. She was president of the Beta Club, secretary of the National Honors Society and a member of the Grays Knob Bible Church youth group.


Her hobbies include reading, swimming, hiking, fishing, running, volunteering and browsing Pinterest.


Her future plans are to attend Lindsey Wilson College this fall as a nursing major. After obtaining her bachelors of science in nursing, she plans to attend graduate school and become a nurse anesthetist.


KENDRA LEEANN CONLEY


Kendra is the 18-year-old daughter of Eddie and Tina Conley, of Cumberland.


Her extracurricular activities include dance team, National Honors Society, Beta Club, volunteering at Christ’s Hands and she is a member of the central Baptist church youth group.


Her hobbies include fishing, four-wheeling, reading, scrapbooking, designing websites and playing the piano.


Her future plans are to attend Southeast Community College and receive an associate’s degree in nursing, then transfer to the University of Kentucky to receive a bachelor degree and continue education to become a nurse practitioner.


XIAO-YIN CHEN


Xiao-Yin is the 18-year-old daughter of Mei-Wah Cheng, of Harlan.


Her extracurricular activities include 4H Teen Club, academic team, band, Beta Club, color guard, FBLA, Gifted, journalism, leadership and tennis.


Her hobbies include drawing, painting, blogging, volunteering at local organizations, traveling and creating new memories.


Her future plans are to attend the University of Kentucky to pursue a bachelor’s degree in psychology, attend medical school and one day become a pediatric psychiatrist.


JOCELYN LAUREN BALL


Jocelyn is the 18-year-old daughter of Phillip and Tracey Ball, of Evarts.


Her extracurricular activities include cheerleading, National Honors Society, Beta Club, and Educational Talent Search


Her hobbies include hiking, four-wheeling, fishing, shopping, hanging out with friends and family and spending her daddy’s money.


Her future plans are to attend the University of Louisville and major in biology. She then plans on attending an accredited dental school and return home to set up a practice.


CAITLIN NOELLE DORRIS


Caitlin is the 18-year-old daughter of Kimberly Kelly, of Evarts.


Her extracurricular activities include National Honors Society, Beta Club, Educational Talent Search, Thespian Society, Southeast Scholars, First Priority, working as vice president of FBLA, attending the Redbud Missionary Baptist Church and volunteering in God’s Food Pantry.


Her hobbies include knitting, gardening, fishing, participating in kettlebell fitness routines, indulging into do-it-yourself projects and exploring the great Appalachian Mountains.


Her future plans are to attend the University of Kentucky and earn a Bachelors of Science in nursing, then to continue at UK in the College of Medicine to pursue her dream of a career in the pathology field.


ALAINA CHRISTINE MAVINIDIS


Alaina is the 17-year-old daughter of Perry and Wendy Mavinidis, of Wallins.


Her extracurricular activities include Beta Club, Musettes, journalism, Pep Club, and she was the majorette of the Harlan High School Band. She was voted Best Dressed by her senior class and represented her school as an attendant in the Mountain Laurel Festival.


Her hobbies include playing piano and guitar, reading, hiking and spending time with friends and family.


Her future plans are to pursue a bachelor’s degree in health administration at Morehead State University and work towards a career in the medical field.


TAYLOR LYNN HOWARD


Taylor is the 18-year-old daughter of Daniel and Tammy Howard, of Evarts.


Her extracurricular activity include National Honors Society, FBLA, First Priority, Educational Talent Search, Thespian Society, drama club and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel at age 16.


Her hobbies include cooking and baking with her niece Kaydence, drawing, crafting, fishing, camping with friends, acting and performing, participating in her family’s karate classes and singing in the shower.


Her future plans are to attend Northern Kentucky University where she will pursue a bachelor’s degree in fine arts and then relocate to a higher institution where she will work on a master’s degree so one day she can live up to her dream of becoming a Broadway actress.


CHYANNA RAYNE HARRIS


Chyanna is the 18-year-old daughter of Shannon Miller and Chip Harris, of Wallins.


Her extracurricular activities include beta club, NHS, FBLA, Educational Talent Search, softball and volleyball.


Her hobbies include fishing, reading, swimming, four-wheeling, traveling, horseback riding and shopping.


Her future plans are to attend the University of Kentucky, major in Biology, go to medical school and become a pediatrician. She also plans to open her own practice after a few years of work in her hometown.


TIFFANY AKERS


Tiffany is the 18-year-old daughter of Virgil and Cleda Akers, of Stoney Fork.


Her extracurricular activities include tennis, attending and helping with church youth group, First Priority, National Honors Society, and Health Occupation Students of America


Her hobbies include singing for friends and family, playing tennis, tanning, reading, four-wheeling, cooking out, babysitting and tweeting.


Her future plans are to attend Union College to study, obtain a bachelor’s and then transfer into the University of Kentucky’s dental program. After graduating she plans on moving home and putting her degree to use.


TAYLOR COCHRAN


Taylor is the 18-year-old daughter Marvin and Kathy Cochran, of Evarts.


Her extracurricular activities include Harlan county 4-H Teen Club, Beta Club, FBLA where is served as vice president, basketball, cheerleading, volleyball, track, journalism, tennis, softball, Musettes, band and color guard.


Her hobbies include spending time with family and friends, going to the lake, reading, working out and tanning.


Her future plans are to attend Eastern Kentucky University where she will major in pre-law with an emphasis in history. Then she wants to extend her studies into law school to become a corporate lawyer. She then wants to purse her dream and travel the world.


JOURDAN LEDFORD


Jourdan is the 18-year-old daughter of Dane and Barbra Ledford, of Harlan.


Her extracurricular activities include basketball, and softball. She served as vice president of the Harlan Musettes, treasurer of the Future Business Leaders of America, vice president of the Beta Club and she is a member of the Loyall Church of Christ.


Her hobbies include swimming, nail art, crafts, hanging out with friends, going to the lake and attending youth group.
