The Harlan County Bass Anglers held the first of what they hope to be an annual event, giving away fishing rods and reels to school kids who had been chosen throughout the county.

The anglers raised approximately $1,200 to spend on the fishing gear.

“Rigsby’s Bait and Tackle got them for us,” said club president Johnny Ray.

According to Ray, the anglers didn’t choose the kids who were to receive the gear.

“We raised the money for these fishing poles and we’re going to let the schools pick out some kids to give them to,” said Ray in a previous report.

According to Ray, although this is the first time the HCBA has given away fishing poles, the group usually does some sort of charitable activity for the Christmas season.

“Last year we gave turkeys away to laid off coal miners,” mentioned Ray.

Ray said the HCBA did not choose the specific children who received the rods and reels. The group left that decision up to the resource centers of the local school systems. Harlan Independent Schools, Harlan County Schools and Harlan Christian school systems were all included in the giveaway.

The club intends to do a similar giveaway event each year at Christmastime.
