Teleworks USA has opened its doors in Harlan. The result of several months of planning, the facility went online approximately one week ago, with a grand opening event taking place on Tuesday.
Harlan County Judge-Executive Dan Mosley said he was excited about business getting underway.
“When you think about the investment that’s been made here by EKCEP (Eastern Kentucky Concentrated Employment Program), ARC (Appalachian Regional Commission) and the Harlan County Fiscal Court in order to provide an employment solution for people, it’s a great thing.”
Mosley said nine months of work has gone into getting the facility up and running in Harlan.
“Today, we actually can see the results of the labor that’s been put into making it happen,” Mosley said. “They’ve already got 12 people that are being trained, and eight out of the 12 already have job interviews lined up and they’ve only been doing it a week.”
Director of Expansion for EKCEP Michael Cornett said jobs are the reason for the program.
“Teleworks USA is a regional initiative of EKCEP,” said Cornett. “We’ve been in business as Teleworks USA for three, going on four years now. What we aim to do is give people training and access to telework jobs.”
Cornett explained this type of employment gives people the opportunity to work from home as well as from the Teleworks hub facility.
“We really focus on connecting people to some really good training,” said Cornett. “People (train) for four weeks, and they’re able to beef up their resume’s and get the kind of guidance and career advising they need to be able to apply for literally thousands and thousands of telework jobs that are available in the world. We can do that right here in Harlan.”
Cornett said the starting salary on most of these jobs is around $20,000 per year.
“In 2015 alone, our job placements numbered around 251,”Cornet said. “That’s around a $5 million plus of new wages into eastern Kentucky.”
Cornett said the training takes a total of four weeks.
“We couldn’t be happier to already have companies have their sights on the people who are sitting here in Harlan training through Teleworks USA,” Cornett said.
According to Cornett, there are a total of four Teleworks hub facilities in eastern Kentucky.
