The Harlan Health & Rehabilitation Center therapy department’s Superhero 5K run is set to happen on May 21, and is open to all who wish to participate.

Physical Therapist Assistant Kayla Collett said the idea for the run is to help raise funds for Harlan Health and Rehabilitation patients.

“Throughout the year we do different things for our residents,” Collett said. “It’s hard sometimes when we don’t have the funds to do that. So we thought, what better way to raise money than to have some type of fundraiser? We thought it would be fun to do a 5K.”

According to Collett, the race will have a course laid out through the city of Harlan.

“It will start at the Harlan Center,” Collett explained. “We’ll have everything marked.”

Collett said there are a large number of people in the area that enjoy this type of event.

“They like to run,” Collett said. “We thought it would be fun to come out one morning and just take a good leisurely walk or run around town and see if we could raise some money for our residents here at Harlan Health and Rehabilitation.”

The registration fee is $25 for adults 18 and over, $15 for folks aged 11 to 17 and those 10 and under can register for $10.

Collett said the event is being sponsored by Harlan Health and Rehabilitation Center, Health Care Therapy Services, Alexander Investment Services, Harlan County Farm Bureau and El Charrito Mexican restaurant.

“We will have first- second- and third-place medals in each category,” Collett said. “But mostly, it’s for the fun of it.”

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. at the Harlan Center on the day of the run with the run starting at 10 a.m., or you can pre-register by picking up a form at the Harlan Center or at Harlan Health & Rehabilitation Center (behind Harlan ARH Hospital). If you are unable to pick up a form but still wish to pre-register or would like more information on the event, call 606-573-7250 ext. 239.

All proceeds to the Harlan Health & Rehabilitation Center’s resident activity fund.
