A portion of KY 38 in Harlan County at mile point 10 (1.5 miles east of Evarts) is currently closed and is expected to re-open on Thursday at noon.
According to a press release from the department of transportation, the road closure is necessary to allow KYTC crews to remove debris obstructing the roadway. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet asks motorists to be aware of the work zone, expected long delays and to utilize safe driving habits when traveling through the area.
Magistrate Bill Moore said the slide was near a construction zone.
“It has nothing to do with the construction they’re doing, it’s about 75 yards past the construction zone,” Moore said. “There’s a very significant slide there. It’s probably about 100 feet long by about 200 feet wide.”
Moore said crews were in the process of getting a detour open to allow traffic through utilizing a nearby CSX railroad bed.
“We hope to have it (the detour) open this evening,” Moore said concerning a time frame to get the detour open. “It’s a bad situation right now. The state’s working hard to get it open.”
The date, time and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur. Dial 511 or navigate 511.ky.gov and www.waze.com for the latest in traffic and travel information in the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
