The Harlan City Council decided to support One Harlan County, an organization currently getting off the ground, during a meeting on Monday.

Mayor Danny Howard talked to the council about One Harlan County during his report to council.

According to Howard, the mission of the group is to find ways of economically advancing the county.

Howard said representatives from Harlan ARH Hospital, Harlan County Schools and Harlan Independent Schools as well as members of the Harlan County Chamber of Commerce have been attending the One Harlan County meetings.

Howard said Harlan ARH Hospital has donated $20,000 to support the group.

“This group’s goal is to do things that county government can’t do,” Howard said. “If there is something that needs to be done to get a property ready…it will be this group’s duty to go in and make that happen.”

Howard said the county is bringing in a consultant group to help local businesses that have been negatively impacted by the downturn in the coal industry.

“As of today, this group has put together in hard funds $61,881,” Howard said. “I would like for us to consider a $1,000 membership.”

The council passed a motion to obtain a membership in One Harlan County for $1,000.

Howard also updated the council on a couple of city projects involving culverts at Woodland Hills and a sewer project at Wallins.

“We finished up the projects in Woodland Hills,” Howard said, referencing the installation of a pair of culverts that has been ongoing for some time. “We’re still continuing going down the river toward Wallins, that project is still ongoing.”

In other council activity:

• Harlan City Fire Chief Linette Hutchison reported her department conducted 13 commercial inspections, five single-family dwellings were inspected and 138 man-hours of training were completed;

• Harlan City Police Chief Mike Thomas reported his department patrolled 13,213 miles, received 2,487 calls, completed nine accident reports, worked 19 criminal cases, issued 92 citations and performed 40 arrests.
