UPS Public Relations representative Dan McMackin has confirmed the decision has been made to close the UPS facility in Harlan.
According to McMackin, UPS employees have been notified. All employees are being offered the opportunity to follow their work to one of two other facilities, one in Hazard and one in London. He said this move will result in a closer commute for many of the 18 people currently working in Harlan. The mechanic assigned to the Harlan facility currently splits his time between the Harlan building and Hazard.
McMackin said the decision to close the leased building in Harlan was due to technology upgrades being made system-wide at UPS. Those upgrades are being done to remain competitive in an industry being impacted by growth in e-commerce.
