The Kentucky State Police released information Wednesday regarding a shooting incident that occurred at Baxter on Sunday.
KSP Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs said KSP Post 10 Harlan was contacted at 1:03 a.m. about the shooting incident at a residence on Sukey Ridge Road at Baxter.
Jacobs said KSP Trooper Kevin Miller responded to the scene at approximately 1:30 a.m. to begin an investigation.
“A preliminary investigation indicates that Timothy Shackleford 46, of Baxter, went to the home of Terry Cornett, 60, of Baxter,” Jacobs said.
Jacobs said an apparent altercation ensued between Shackleford and Cornett.
“Mr. Cornett shot Mr. Shackleford in the stomach one time causing non-life threatening injuries,” Jacobs said.
Shackleford was transported by EMS and later airlifted to Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tennessee.
At press time on Wednesday, Shackleford was still in the hospital at Holston Valley Medical Center.
Jacobs said there have been no arrests made as a result of the incident at this time. He said the investigating officer will be presenting the case to the Harlan County Grand Jury.
The case remains under investigation by Miller. He was assisted at the scene by KSP Sgt. Jay Perkins, Trooper John Carlock and Harlan City Police Department Officer Branden Watts.
