The Harlan County Spelling Bee will be held at 6 p.m. on Jan. 11 in the Harlan County High School auditorium. Contestants from Harlan County Schools, Harlan Independent and Harlan County Christian will compete, with the champion advancing to the state spelling bee in Louisville.
Winners will receive cash prizes and trophies. This event is sponsored by the Bank of Harlan and Harlan County Farm Bureau. In case of a snow day on Jan. 11, the spelling bee will be automatically postponed to a later date TBD.
Students competing in first- through third-grade include: Black Mountain — Ethan Lewis and Cole Howard; Cawood — Addison Lemar and Abby Ray; Cumberland — Abrielle Sherman and Maggie Goins; Evarts — Jaicelynn Napier and Hannah Bennett; Green Hills — Shaleigh Chappell and Sheyenne Cantrell; James A. Cawood Elementary School — Addisyn Jones and Landon Smith; Rosspoint — Jeremy Goldsberry and Brett Wesley Johnson; and Wallins — Hannah Mefford and Jacob Baker.
Students competing in fourth- through eighth-grade include: Black Mountain — Hanna Pittman; Cawood — Robbie Cantrell; Cumberland — James Pinkley; Evarts — Cameryn Aslinger; Green Hills — Danielle Asher; Harlan County Christian — Lucy Bryson; Harlan Independent — McKenna Jackson; James A. Cawood Elementary School — Sean Cooper; Rosspoint — Marissa Hatfield; and Wallins — Tiara Lambert.
