A Lynch woman was killed in a collision involving a car and a Harlan County Schools bus on Friday morning.

According to a press release from the Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan, received a call at 7:06 a.m. of a two-vehicle collision involving a school bus on U.S. 119 at Blair.

KSP Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs said a preliminary investigation indicates a 2007 black Honda Accord was traveling north on U.S. 119 when the vehicle crossed the center line, striking a school bus head-on that was traveling in the southbound direction of U.S.119. A student, teacher’s aide, and the driver of the bus were transported to Harlan ARH Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the school bus, Eugene Stagnolia, 76, of Cumberland, and the teacher’s aide, Wanda Tinsley, 54, of Lynch, were treated at the Harlan County ARH Hospital and released. The name of the student cannot be released; the student was also treated and released from the Harlan ARH Hospital.

Jacobs said the female operating the Honda Accord, Bridgette Mallory, 32, was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Harlan County Coroner. No other occupants were in the Honda.

Harlan County Schools Superintendent Mike Howard issued the following statement this morning, “First and foremost our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of the deceased. We are thankful the injuries appear to be minor to our driver, bus monitor and student who were on the bus at the time of the accident. They were taken to Harlan ARH Hospital following the accident. Our transportation department officials, safe schools director and other key personnel are at the scene assisting the investigators as requested.”

Howard said crisis counselors were dispatched to Cumberland Elementary School where the accident victim’s children attend school.

KSP troopers including a Kentucky State Police accident reconstructionist responded to the scene. Tri-City Rescue Squad, LifeCare Ambulance Service, Benham, Lynch and Cumberland city police departments, and the Harlan Sheriff’s Office assisted.
