Wallins pair arrested in theft

A man and a woman are facing theft-related charges after police allegedly found several items that had been reported stolen in their possession.

Claude Sargent, 34, and Christy Sargent, 34, both of Wallins, were arrested on Thursday by Loyall City Police Chief Mike Lunsford.

According to the complaints, the couple were found in possession of a heater, scrap jewelry, post hole digger, sledge hammer, three handgun grips, holster and belt, three belt buckles a Black and Decker laser and an electric dremel tool. All items had been reported stolen. The items are valued at approximately $600, and had been sold to Harlan Pawn for a total of $95.

Claude Sargent was charged with receiving stolen property under $10,000 and theft by deception under $500. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $7,000 full cash bond.

In other police activity:

• Jacob Ryan Wright, 23, of Evarts, was arrested on a charge of second-degree criminal abuse of a child under 12 by Evarts City Police Assistant Chief Owen Noe. According to the complaint, a report was received that a child had been spanked, leaving minatory bruising. Social Services was called. Wright told police he realized he had spanked the child too hard and was worried about the child, but failed to take the child to the hospital. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full cash bond;

• Billy J. Pace, 32, of Baxter, was arrested by Harlan County Sheriff’s Deputy Denny Jones on a charge of second-degree trafficking a controlled substance, public intoxication by controlled substance (excludes alcohol) and possession of a controlled substance. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full cash bond and a $1,000 bond secured by 10 percent;

• Larry Wayne Thomas, 37, of Cawood, was arrested by Kentucky State Police Trooper Jimmy Halcomb on Friday. Thomas was charged with third-degree burglary and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full cash bond;

• Billy J. Johnson, 46, of Harlan, was arrested by KSP Trooper Kenny Sergent on Friday. He was charged with second-degree robbery and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $2,000 bond secured by 10 percent.
