The Harlan County Tourism Commission held its inaugural meeting recently, electing officers and setting the goals for the commission.
Harlan County Judge-Executive Dan Mosley sat in on the meeting.
After the members introduced themselves, Cleon Cornett nominated Jeff Wilder to serve as chairman. The nomination was upheld by the commission with no objections.
With the officers in place, Mosley explained to the commission what he hoped they would achieve, including finding ways to increase revenue from the county’s tourist attractions.
“We have a plethora of them (tourist attractions),” Mosley said. “I feel like the new Trail Town designation is going to help bring a lot more people to this area. This is a perfect time to get this off the ground.”
According to Mosley, the Harlan County Tourism Commission is expected to work with existing tourism entities around the county.
“This is a way of having an entity that works with the existing entities,” Mosley said. “We have existing commissions in Cumberland, Harlan and Evarts, but there’s not anything that ties them together.”
Mosley said he hopes the Harlan County Tourism Commission will meet with the directors of the existing tourism commissions to talk about ways to package deals to get people here for longer periods of time and to collaborate on events so we don’t have competing events in the county.
Mosley mentioned collaboration between the cities and the county is important.
“We’ve got to work smarter, not harder,” Mosley said. “I think that’s a big thing moving forward with this commission.”
In other commission activity:
• Cornett was nominated for and accepted the position of vice-chairman of the commission;
• Casey Hendrickson accepted the position of treasurer/secretary for the commission.
