A woman is facing multiple charges including possession of a controlled substance after police allegedly found a bag containing syringes when they went to investigate a theft.
Tonya Louise Shuler, 32, of Smith, was arrested by Kentucky State Police Trooper Kenny Sergent on Friday.
According to the citation, Shuler stole $1,000 from a bank account belonging to Dustin R. Smith, 28, of Baxter. When Sergent arrived, Shuler was in Smith’s room. Smith told police Shuler was giving the money back and he did not want to press charges. While outside in order to recover the money — which Shuler had hidden under a bush — police found a white laundry bag containing syringes near the money. Shuler stated the syringes belonged to Smith and she just took them outside and hid them. Shuler was placed under arrest. Police found two syringes on her and two tubes of morphine. The morphine had allegedly been stolen from Harlan ARH Hospital. Shuler was also found in possession of a pill bottle.
Shuler was charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with physical evidence, public intoxication by a controlled substance and theft by unlawful taking of a controlled substance under $10,000. She was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $10,000 full cash bond.
Smith was charged with second-degree possession of a controlled substance, prescription controlled substance not in original container, possession of drug paraphernalia and failure to appear. He lodged In the Harlan County Detention Center on full cash bonds totaling $5,900.

• John Phelps, 37, of Louisville, was arrested by Loyall City Police Officer Mitch Alford on Saturday. He was charged with first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine), possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding, no registration plates, no registration receipt and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $15,000 full cash bond;
• Rodney Cloud, 39, of Baxter, was arrested by KSP Trooper Kenny Abner on Friday. Cloud was charged with theft by unlawful taking over $500 and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center on a $5,000 full cash bond;
• Jason Allen North, 37, of Benham, was arrested on Sunday by Cumberland City Police Officer Cody Bargo. North was charged with two counts of carrying a concealed weapon, receiving stolen property (firearm) and receiving stolen property under $500. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
