Two men are facing charges including drug trafficking after police allegedly discovered methamphetamine, cocaine, drug paraphernalia and guns while executing a search warrant at a Cawood residence on Tuesday.

According to a press release, the Harlan County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at the residence of Byrd Smith in the Cawood area. The search warrant was a result of an ongoing investigation conducted by the sheriff’s office. Execution of the search warrant resulted in police locating over 10 grams of methamphetamine, more than 18 grams of cocaine, scales, baggies, syringes, pipes and two handguns. The street value of the drugs is estimated at more than $4,000.

Byrd Smith, 34, of Cawood was charged with first-degree trafficking a controlled substance (methamphetamine), first-degree trafficking a controlled substance (cocaine), possession of a handgun by a convicted felon and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also served with multiple bench warrants including a warrant for child support.

Justin Simpson, 31, of Cumberland, was charged with first-degree trafficking a controlled substance (methamphetamine), first-degree trafficking a controlled substance (cocaine) and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was also served with bench warrants including a Harlan County Circuit Court bench warrant for failure to appear on a Harlan County Sheriff’s Office drug trafficking case.

Both men were lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.

The case remains under investigation by Harlan County Sheriff’s Office narcotics detectives. They were assisted in the execution of the search warrant by Harlan County Sheriff Leslie Smith, Chief Deputy Matt Cope, Deputy Dakota Torstrick, Detectives with Appalachia Narcotics Investigation, Kentucky State Police Trooper Dallas Eubanks and Canine Alex.

In other police activity:

• Benjamin Blake, 41, was arrested by Harlan County Sheriff’s Deputy Mark Saylor on Monday. He was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, first-degree possession of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) and promoting contraband. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center;

• Keith Lamb, 43, of Harlan, was arrested on Monday by Harlan County Sheriff’s Deputy Danny Lewis on a warrant obtained by Cope. Lamb was charged with first-degree criminal mischief and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center;

• William Saylor, 28 of Coldiron was served on Monday with a warrant obtained by Cope. He was charged with fraudulent use of a credit card (over $500 but less than $10,000);

• Brittany Marie Smith, 26, of Harlan, was arrested by KSP Trooper Kenny Sergent on Tuesday. She was charged with theft by unlawful taking under $10,000 and lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center;

• Brandon Lee Moses, 29, of Bledsoe, was arrested by KSP Trooper Justin Barton on Tuesday. He was charged with receiving stolen property under $10,000, no registration plate, no registration receipt, failure of owner to maintain required insurance, failure to produce insurance card, operating on a suspended or revoked license, improper registration plate, improper display of registration plate and operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs. He was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.

A defendant is presumed innocent and is entitled to a fair trial at which government must prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
