Burnett charged with murder

A Knox County man is dead in what Kentucky State Police are calling a murder.

According to a news release from the KSP, Post 10 Harlan received a call at approximately 10:57 p.m. Monday about a stabbing at a residence on Moores Creek Road in the Dewitt community of Knox County. Troopers from Post 10 responded to the residence and began an investigation.

They located a male individual deceased in the living room by the front door, according to the release. KSP Det. Jake Wilson was contacted to respond to the scene to lead the investigation.

The preliminary investigation indicates that Gary Hobbs, 33, of Dewitt, was allegedly stabbed twice in the chest by Brandon Burnett, 27, also of Dewitt, and was found deceased in the living room.

Burnett stated that Hobbs was attempting to leave the residence when he shut the door, preventing Hobbs from leaving. Burnett then allegedly stabbed Hobbs twice. Hobbs was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Knox County Coroner. Hobbs had been at the residence visiting and was attempting to leave and go back to his residence when he was stabbed, officers state.

Burnett was taken to the Barbourville Police Department and interviewed.

Police say Burnett admitted to stabbing Hobbs and was charged with murder. The release states the he also admitted to taking different drugs, including Flaka, during the evening.

Burnett was lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.

The case is still under investigation by Det. Jake Wilson. Also assisting at the scene were Tpr. Chad Gregory, Tpr. Russell Maynard, Captain Phillip Burnett and the Knox County Coroner.
