Shannon Doan Duff, of Harlan, has been recognized as the “2016 Appalachian Woman of the Year” by the Harlan County Domestic Violence Council during a luncheon held recently at the Harlan Center as the highlight of the ninth annual Celebration of Appalachian Women conference.
“Each year the event has grown with this year having our highest attendance of 159 women and girls. We select a woman we feel is representative of the honor of Appalachian Woman of the Year. We are pleased to honor Shannon and commend her for her efforts in helping others,” said HCDVC Victim Advocate Sheryl Caudel.
During the luncheon, ladies were entertained by the music of Lonnie Milwee, and “Mama,” also known as Belinda Riley, made her annual appearance and led the girls from the Appalachian ChalleNGe Academy in a dance.
The conference is an annual event hosted by Harlan County Domestic Violence Council and Cumberland Valley Domestic Violence Services. It is a daylong event with workshops of interest to women and is open to all women and girls over the age of 13.
Caudel stated “Next year will be the conference 10th anniversary of the conference, so we are already in the planning process for that event.”
