The 2016 Harlan County Safety Days Mine Rescue Contest, sponsored by Cumberland Tourism, was held July 19-21 on the Cumberland campus of Southeast Kentucky Community & Technical College.

The three-day event allowed members from six teams to participate in mine rescue, first aid, pre-shift and bench competition.

The Harlan County Safety Days allow the teams to hone their skills while competing against each other for awards. Each team receives the same problem and is judged by Mine Safety and Health Administration and Kentucky Office of Mine Safety personnel.

The 2016 overall mine rescue champion was Arch Coal Lone Mountain Processing. Arch Coal Lone Mountain Processing also won day one and day two mine rescue events.

Tony Lloyd with Revelation Energy, LLC was the top benchman in the Drager division while Nick Shannon of Alden Resources Mine Rescue Services team won the benchman award in the BioPak division. The first place pre-shift award went to David Mackey with the Kentucky Coal Academy. First-aid and combination (first-aid and mine rescue) awards went to Alden Resources Mine Rescue Services Team.

The 2016 overall mine rescue champion was Arch Coal Lone Mountain Processing.
