Kentucky State Police Trooper Kenny Abner said Saturday that a woman sustained multiple injuries in a crash on KY 522 at Putney, and the driver who struck her vehicle was charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence.
Abner said Kentucky State Police Post 10 received the call about the crash at 7:07 a.m. His investigation of the crash involved a 2016 Toyota Tundra truck, operated by Dewayne Smith, 40, of Kenvir, and a 2005 Chevrolet Impala, operated by Mary McClure, 53, of Putney.
According to Abner’s information regarding the wreck, Smith was traveling northbound when his truck crossed the centerline and struck McClure’s southbound car. Smith’s truck overturned and slid 109 feet and came to rest in the northbound lane of KY 522. McClure’s car slid 47 feet and came to rest on the shoulder of the southbound lane.
Abner said the Harlan County Rescue Squad was dispatched to the scene due to McClure being trapped inside her vehicle. Squad members used hydraulic tools to free McClure from her vehicle.
Johnson’s LifeCare Ambulance Service transported McClure to Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, Tennessee. Abner said McClure sustained a broken leg and multiple other injuries. Smith was transported to Harlan ARH Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Abner said he cited Smith to court on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence and no proof of insurance.
McClure was cited to court for an expired license.
The crash remains under investigation by Abner.
