The red, white and blue of the Stars & Strides 5K is coming to Harlan.

The East Tennessee race management team has joined forces with the Harlan Tourism and Convention Commission to bring the 5K glow run to Harlan on July 23 beginning at 8:45 p.m. It is a timed race scheduled to run downtown with medals for the age division winners. A large portion of the proceeds will benefit Hospice of the Bluegrass.

Vicki Prince, Hospice of the Bluegrass volunteer coordinator, said they anticipate the race to be a success. “We are very excited to be working with Vibe 5 and look forward to a great turnout at Stars & Strides. It should be a lot of fun for everyone.”

According to Vibe 5 co-owner Travis Moody, most runners will wear red, white and blue race attire for the event and paint and powder will be available too. There will also be red, white and blue inflatables as well as black lights for photo ops. “We did this race in London in May and had over 230 registered runners. We hope to surpass that in Harlan,” Moody added.

“It should be a fun event for the community and a chance to raise money for a great cause. Our company is very excited to be doing this. Our pre-registered runners will get a T-shirt and glow sticks. We will also have glow merchandise for sale,” Shipley said. “We allow one child age 10 and under to run free with a paid parent just to help the public participate as a family. We encourage everyone to pre-register before July 21 at,” he added.

He said the run will also feature a 12 x 12 video screen, a DJ, a post-race party and other events being added daily.

If you would like to be one of the 5K runners or serve as a volunteer, you can visit or for more information. Churches and other groups may get a special rate. You can also find the special rates at [email protected]
