The Harlan County Retired Teachers Association met on April 12 at the Harlan County Extension Depot. The meeting was called to order by Polly McLain, president, and the pledge and devotional were given by Mary Lynn Pace, vice-president. Carol Flanagan gave the secretary’s report and Karen Alred gave the treasurer’s report.
Hanna Pace, a fifth-grade student at Black Mountain Elementary School, was recognized as the winner of the KRTA/AARP Kentucky Grandparent of the Year essay contest winner for Harlan County and for the Upper Cumberland District, which includes Bell, Clay, Harlan, Knox, Laurel and Whitley counties, and Middlesboro. She wrote the essay about her grandmother, Sharol Pace.
Ralph Souleyret was recognized for attending his first county meeting and was presented a coffee mug.
Members and guests enjoyed a potluck meal. The next meeting will begin at 1 p.m. on June 14 at the Harlan County Extension Depot.
