Forward in the Fifth (FIF), a nonprofit education organization that helps to raise educational attainment levels in the Fifth Congressional District, is seeking nominations for the Appalachian Leaders in Education (AppLE) Awards.
Now in its fifth year, the AppLE Awards recognize leaders in education, including local parent and student groups, who have made significant contributions to promote and support education in Forward in the Fifth’s 45-county primary service region.
“Education plays an important role in our personal and regional success, says Jim Tackett, FIF Executive Director. “Whether in a formal or informal setting, we all can identify with individuals who were instrumental in ensuring positive outcomes for us and others. The passion, enthusiasm, and expertise these heroes exhibit are appreciated and deserve being recognized.”
The AppLE Award categories for nominations include:
• Educator (early childhood, K-12, higher education, adult education)
• Community/Business Leader
• Parent or Parent Group
• Student or Student Group
Forward in the Fifth will be accepting nominations for the 2016 AppLE Awards through August. Individuals or groups may self-nominate.

Nominees’ efforts must occur within Forward in the Fifth’s 45-county primary service area, which includes: Adair, Bath, Bell, Boyd, Breathitt, Carter, Casey, Clay, Clinton, Cumberland, Elliott, Estill, Floyd, Garrard, Green, Harlan, Jackson, Jessamine, Johnson, Knott, Knox, Laurel, Lawrence, Lee, Leslie, Letcher, Lincoln, Magoffin, Martin, McCreary, Menifee, Metcalfe, Monroe, Morgan, Owsley, Perry, Pike, Pulaski, Rockcastle, Russell, Rowan, Taylor, Wayne, Whitley and Wolfe counties.
Finalists will be notified by the organization, and winners will be announced during Forward in the Fifth’s 30th anniversary celebration and upcoming summit on Sept. 23 at The Center for Rural Development in Somerset.
