Just after releasing the news of yet another huge break in his musical career, local singer/songwriter Chris Ellis received news he and his band The Weekenders had been chosen to compete for a spot in what is considered one of the biggest music festivals in Tennessee – Bonnaroo.
The opportunity comes on the heel of Ellis filling out an application with Knoxville based radio station 103.5 WIMZ for their ‘Road to Roo’ competition. Ellis is familiar with the festival, having attended before as well as being a fan with some of this year’s featured acts.
“Bonnaroo is my first, and only so far, music festival that I’ve been to as a fan and it was a once in a lifetime experience,” said Ellis. “Just to share a line-up with some of the featured acts including Pearl Jam, Chris Stapleton and Jason Isbell would be a dream come true, not to mention it takes place in the great state of Tennessee!”
The Weekenders preliminary round is Monday at Two Doors Down in Maryville, Tennessee, and Ellis says from what he has been told, The Weekenders are the only band that has been chosen from out of town and as such needs his fans support now more than ever.
“To say we need our folks there is an understatement,” said Ellis. “I know it’s quite a long drive on a Monday night, but at a time when showing their support and getting out to a live show means that much more, I’d be eternally grateful to see some familiar faces and most of all, have a blast with us and show them what we can bring!”
The Weekenders are tentatively scheduled to perform at 10 p.m. and their set should last around half an hour. Fan voting accounts for 25 percent of the final vote and the top 8 bands will move on to the semi-finals which will be held next month. The local finals will be held on April 1, with the winner going head to head at a state level in Nashville on April 4.
