The Powell River is a quiet and scenic waterway that is a perfect place to give paddling a try. On Sept. 11, from 2 to 5 p.m., a paddling event with boats and instructors will be available to let you give it a try.

Kayaks and canoes will be on hand, along with flotation vests. You can to bring your own kayak, canoe or john boat if you wish. The event will begin at Riverside Rentals on N. Riverside Road — go to the end of Cave Springs Road, cross the bridge, turn right and go about 1/2 mile.

You will launch at Riverside Rentals and take-out at the picnic area at Riverside Baptist Church – about a mile downstream. This is an easy paddle just to see if you might like to do more paddling in the future. Boat and participant transportation back to Riverside Rentals will be provided by Riverside Rentals and the Well Being Conference Center.

Hot dogs and bottled water will be on hand at Riverside Rentals. This entire event is free and a great chance to get out on the water and find out how easy it is to paddle a kayak or a canoe.

The event is a function of the Claiborne County Tourism Commission and is organized by its Powell River Tourism Committee, which is working towards providing more access points to the river.
