Since its foundation in 2006, Discover Downtown Middlesboro, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, has worked to spearhead revitalization of the downtown area. The organization has accomplished this through coordinating grassroots action by volunteers on four committees – organization, promotion, design, and economic restructuring.
One of the most recent ways DDM has accomplished revitalization of the historic downtown area is by bringing in the Levitt Amp concert series to the downtown this past summer.
Through the Levitt Amp concert series, DDM was able to provide free, live musical entertainment on a weekly basis, which in turn brought in hundreds of tourism dollars each week as acts came from as far away as hundreds of miles to perform in ten consecutive weekend concerts at the newly constructed Levitt AMP stage located at 20th Street and Cumberland.
DDM recently reached out to supporters to help bring the series back to Middlesboro for summer 2016. After public voting for the contest was closed, the group found out that based on the votes from their supporters, they had made it into the top 25 contestants. Next, Levitt Pavilions reviewed the proposals of the 25 finalists and the 15 Levitt AMP winners were announced with DDM making it to the winner’s list.
After much anticipation, it is time for the 2016 Levitt AMP series to begin. The first concert took place at 7 p.m. and the series continues through the next nine Saturdays. Roosevelt Dime was the first featured act and promised to bring a vast array of musical talent to Middlesboro.
Last year’s headliners included: Dale Ann Bradley, Jeni Carr, Jenna and Her Cool Friends and Lauren Shera.
