A complaint of a car being broken into on Monday resulted in the arrest of a man and woman on drug charges, including possession of a controlled substance (believed to be heroin).

Lyle F. Bargo, 40, of Brownsburg, Ind., and Cheryl Ann Bargo, 52, of Smith, were arrested by Harlan City Police.

Harlan City Police Chief Mike Thomas said Lyle and Cheryl drove by while officers were investigating a vehicle break-in on South Main Street.

Thomas said Harlan City Police Cpl. Jeff Owens was speaking to the victim when the Bargos drove by.

“We conducted a traffic stop,” said Owens. “Once we got them out of the vehicle, Lyle Bargo showed signs of impairment.”

Thomas said both the driver and passenger were determined to be under the influence.

“We searched the vehicle and found a bag that is believed to be marijuana and several needles,” said Thomas.

Owens said the marijuana was found by Thomas and Sgt. Matt Cope.

Thomas said several used needles were found, along with one “loaded” needle filled with what is believed to be heroin.

According to the citation, Owens located the needles stored under the vinyl connected to the windshield.

The driver of the vehicle was charged with possession of a controlled substance and transported by Officer Will Pope to Harlan ARH Hospital for blood and urine tests, said Owens.

Owens said Cheryl Bargo was taken to the Harlan County Detention Center to be booked on the public intoxication charge.

Owens said once at the jail, Deputy Jailer Alisha Howard conducted a search of Bargo’s person which turned up a bag of pills hidden inside a body cavity.

“She had eight oblong pills believed to be Xanax stuffed in a body cavity,” said Owens.

Thomas said he is unaware of any other recent arrests in Harlan involving heroin.

Thomas said heroin is on the rise due to other drugs being harder to obtain.

“This is the first that I have seen, and the first I’ve heard of it (heroin) being in Harlan,” said Thomas.

Thomas said Lyle Bargo may have brought the alleged heroin with him from Indiana.

Lyle Bargo was arrested by Pope and charged with operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs, possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and first-degree possession of a controlled substance. Bargo was lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.

Cheryl Bargo was arrested by Owens and charged with public intoxication, first-degree promoting contraband, second-degree possession of a controlled substance, prescription controlled substance not in proper container and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Both were lodged in the Harlan County Detention Center.
