Lady Bears rally past Clay

After dropping the first set, Harlan County rallied to send a trio of seniors out with a victory over Clay County on Thursday. HCHS edged the visiting Lady Tigers 16-25, 27-25, 25-22 in the regular season finale as Chyanna Harris, Lauren Lee and Whitney Stevens each walked away with a win in their final home game.

“The seniors were determined to get a win in their last home game,” said Harlan County coach Donna Vicini. “This is the second night in a row that we have fought back to get a win. I am real proud of the girls.”

Katelyn Reynolds recorded four kills and a tip to pace Harlan County in the opening set. Harris contributed an ace, a kill and a tip. Stevens and Brittany Clem each had an ace and a point, while Lee added a tip and a point.

Stevens had seven kills and two aces to start the comeback in the second set. Reynolds turned in five tips and a kill. Harris tallied a block, one tip and two points. Lee had two tips and two points, while Charleigh Mefford added a tip and a point.

Harlan County overcame a slow start to complete the comeback effort in the third set.

Stevens delivered two aces, two kills, a pair of tips and a spike in the final set. Reynolds contributed four kills and a tip. Clem had two aces, a kill and a service point. Lee added an ace, a service point and a tip.

The Lady Bears fell 16-21, 22-24 in the junior varsity contest.

Cellina Hatmaker combined for four kills, three aces and a service point in the two sets. Mefford recorded four aces, two service points and a tip. Tarolyn Burkhart contributed two service points, two aces and two kills. Shelby Cowan delivered a tip and an ace. Keirstian Hall had two tips, an ace and a service point, while Candice Huff added a pair of service points.

Harlan County (17-8) returns to action Monday in the 52nd District Tournament at Bell County. The Lady Bears will take on Middlesboro at 5:30 p.m., while Harlan will face Bell County at 7 p.m. Clay County closes the regular season at 9-13.
